KENDRICK LAMAR TO HEADLINE SUPERBOWL 59 HALFTIME SHOW
September 11, 2024K DOT HAS BEEN CHOSEN TO PERFORM AT SUPERBOWL 59
On September 9th, 2024 it was announced that Kendrick Lamar will be performing at the upcoming Superbowl held in New Orleans, Louisiana on February 9th, 2025. Although K Dot is regarded as one of the highly respected artists in the genre of hip-hop, some fans are torn over the decision to have an LA native perform in a city that is home to many hip-hop legends.
Soon after the news broke, fans all over chimed in on the matter and gave their opinion on the polarizing choice. After the extensive battle between Kendrick Lamar and Drake, some people are viewing this as the NFL’s way of capitalizing off of the situation by booking the hottest rap artist of 2024. There are also some fans who feel like a seasoned artist such as Lil Wayne or Master P should be chosen to headline the halftime show being that they are Louisiana natives. These various opinions all make points that spark controversy within the hip-hop community. Nevertheless, Kendrick Lamar has been a huge part of the hip-hop culture and community since he first came on the scene back in 2009. His discography, performances and achievements prove that he is one of the greatest artists of our generation.
With the recent history of Superbowl performers, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that Kendrick Lamar was chosen. Not many rap artists have the stage presence that K Dot possesses, which elevates him above most of his peers. As a rap/hip-hop artist it is easy to fall into the formula of mundane performances that provide all of the music but none of the showmanship. As the first solo rap artist to perform at the Superbowl it is only right to choose someone who can uphold the standard of true artistry within the genre. History has shown that Kendrick has been successful with stepping into that realm and allowing his fans to be emersed in the performance. His most recent world tour, The Big Steppers Tour, was the highest grossing rap tour of all time, earning an estimate of $111 million dollars over the course of 73 shows. This accomplishment is not made without the dedication & artistry of Mr. Lamar, something that shouldn’t be glossed over when it comes to his career capabilities.
Louisiana has birthed many legends of our culture who have dedicated their life to hip-hop and music overall. Lil Wayne is regarded as one of the greatest rap artists of all time and many people want to see him on the Superbowl stage before he hangs up his jersey. Some people view it as a missed opportunity to have Cash Money, Young Money and even No Limit all on the same stage if it were possible. Superbowl 59 seems to be an ideal destination for this hip-hop dream to come true but the powers that be had a different vision in mind. A lot of people are looking to Jay Z for the answers since he and Roc Nation are apart of the board that curates the halftime performance. This led to speculations of hidden agendas being brought to the forefront. Sending the hip-hop community on a tirade of thoughts & opinions that are still evolving. As time passes, we will see how the dust settles. It is clear that the story is still being written. The big question is; when will it end?
